Kindergarten Curriculum

The curriculum emphasizes Jesusí love for each student. The focus incorporates God ís love for us as shown in His plan for our salvation. The Bible stories are enhanced through chapel worship, songs, prayers, books, video, and hands on activities.

Reading/Language Development

The curriculum nurtures emergent literacy, phonic skills, and emergent writing with a variety of literature, leading up to the students being able to appreciate the various forms of literature and begin reading on their own. The Harcourt Trophies program is used as a guide to ensure continuity with the next grades.

The curriculum fosters strong phonemic awareness of both consonants and vowels. High frequency sight words and handwriting activities are also practiced.

Using the Harcourt series, the curriculum incorporates hands on manipulative, learning games, and problem solving to enhance the core kindergarten concepts of numeration (counting), shapes, graphing, patterning, and recognition of numerals, time to the hour, money, operations and functions.

The curriculum promotes the child ís awareness of the physical, environmental, and life sciences. Units of study include activities involving the body and care of our bodies, the senses, our weather, seasons of the year, the earth and oceans, and magnets.

Social Studies

The curriculum emphasizes the child's world at home and at school. The major holidays of the year are studied, along with the hands-on activities and books to learn of the people and life involved with each one.

Students reinforce basic math and reading skills using online games and websites. Students practice mouse control and begin using the keyboard.

Art, Music, Choir, and Physical Education

These areas of learning (often coordinated with other areas of the curriculum) promote the child's awareness of cultural and aesthetic values in the fine arts as well as the development of fine and gross motor skills.

Kindergarten Students will participate in an introductory experience to Spanish Language Early Concept Words. They will be introduced to number words 1-10, Color Words, Shape Words and some greeting words. This is done in connection with a Social Studies Unit on Mexico.

Home and School Connections

The staff works to build a cooperative link between the home and the classroom through weekly newsletters, parent teacher conferences, worship opportunities, multiple Open House opportunities such as The Learning Fair, Parent teacher League sponsored activities and other informal conversations as the occasions arise.
