Fifth Grade Curriculum



Church teachings, the 10 Commandments, the Holy Trinity, Lordís Prayer and Sacraments are areas of focus that all students study as they are reminded of their salvation on a daily basis. Memory work through bible verses and the catechism are also included as part of the curriculum. Concordia Publishing House series is used.


Textbook, novels and short stories are used to focus on vocabulary and comprehension. Individual reading is encouraged through Accelerated Reader and accounts for ten percent of the reading grade. The Harcourt Trophies series is used.


Grammar, parts of speech and creative writing enhance student ability to express themselves in written language. The McGraw-Hill series is used.


The students continue to use technology to complete classroom writing assignments and math projects as well as a multimedia project. Students also learn how to write basic formulas for Excel and formatting tools to insert graphs in their spreadsheets. Chrome books are used on a one to one ratio.


Foundational math concepts, critical thinking skills, problem solving and applications are practiced through daily lesson structure and assessment. The Saxon Math Series is used.


Fifth grade science focuses on microorganisms, plants, the human body and electromagnetism. Hands on activities reinforce concepts using the Scott Foresman series.

Social Studies

Students focus on the history of the Americas and United states history. The McMillian/McGraw-Hill series is used.

Art, Music, Choir, and Physical Education

A variety of mediums are used in Art. Music and Choir expand student awareness and understanding of musical notation, rhythms, styles and purpose. Group and individual band lessons are also available. Physical activity explores group games, personal physical fitness and sportsmanship.


A two year curriculum introduces students to the Spanish Language and culture through a DVD series from the Northern Arizona University.
