Second Grade Curriculum



Godís grace and love for each of us is reinforced through the Old and New Testament Bible stories. We apply these stories to our lives today. Weekly memory verses reinforce the lessons that we study. One in Christ through Concordia Publishing House is one source used in this subject.


We practice and measure the skills needed to become competent, independent readers. Students will use two basal readers during the year. These are supplemented with literature-based units. Accelerated Reader is a computer program that is used as a comprehension check after completing a library reading book. The Harcourt-Trophies series is used.


Students work through decoding process with words by rhyming, synonyms, antonyms, blends, contractions, and using prefixes and suffixes. The Modern Curriculum Press - Phonics Level B series is used.


Writing complete sentences and paragraphs with correct capitalization and punctuation is the main focus. We study parts of a sentence, subject and predicate. Parts of speech, including nouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs are introduced and used to build a variety of sentence structures. Computers are used to assist the students with a variety of language arts skills. The Harcourt-Trophies series is used.


After a review of manuscript letters, students are introduced to cursive handwriting. The Zaner-Bloser Handwriting series is used.


Students will learn strategies to group the words together so that they are easier to memorize and use in daily writing. The Harcourt-Trophies series is used.


Second graders begin to utilize the computer as more of a learning tool by working in the computer room during regular computer classes


Second graders practice and memorize addition and subtraction facts through the use of flash cards and fact tests. Students are introduced to carrying, borrowing, measurement, patterning, skip counting, working with fractions and an introduction to multiplication. Enrichment/remediation is done through a variety of computer activities. The HSP Math series is used.


Students learn about life science, Earth science , and physical science using the Scott Foresman Science.

Social Studies

The focus on the social studies is on the people in their communities and neighborhoods working together. The class also studies the geography of our country and the history of the United States. Map reading skills are also taught. The MacMillan/McGraw-Hill series is used.


Students learn to stay healthy through nutrition, cleanliness, and studying the human body systems. Experiments help reinforce the need for rest, fresh air, and water.

Art, Music, Choir, Physical Education

Second graders create a variety of art projects using many different media. The music and choir program emphasizes the development of the singing voice and working together with others to produce a pleasing sound effect. Movement and team sportsmanship are explored in structured gym classes each week as well as through two fifteen minute recesses each day.


Students will learn about family, community, body, calendar and food. Lesson source; Northern Arizona University - Elementary Spanish.
